Kite flying and a feast

Yet another day. The electricians are still working on rewiring the clinic; it’s a mess in here right now. We were trying to sort things out but just gave up with all of the electricians in here moving stuff about.

I flew my kite yesterday for the first time. It flew pretty well right up until there was a lull in the wind. Even though the kite is pretty light the wind has to be blowing fairly well to keep the parafoil inflated and lift that tail. It’s not a stunt kite, just a single line, but I was still able to get it to loop twice. Pretty cool and nobody said anything to me about it.

We grilled the steaks on Thursday. Our D-Fac site supervisor has two culinary degrees and did an awesome job! He marinated them al day and prepared a mango chutney sauce for them. We made up a big bowel of Greek style salad and had some lobster to go with them. What can I say but Wow! Surf n’ turf in the middle of a war zone; if it hadn’t been for the Hescos surrounding us you’d have never known. We wished Richard well as he was leaving the next day. (another of the South Africans and an excellent chef).

Last night I sat out on the deck of the clinic watching the sun go down and the stars come out.

just out of curiosity, what were you thinking about after watching the sun set?

Another day down- I've got four more left on my contract!

I was also wondering when this wind is going to let up. It's been really windy for the last few days- it's a hot dry wind that dries out your skin and chaps your lips, visibility is down to around half a mile, and it keeps blowing dust in/on everything when I'm trying to clean up and move stuff into the new clinic.

I should clarify, the wind wasn't too bad at night, I could actually see stars. It's been bad during the day though (it is again today).

I was also just happy to be alive...

So Robert, you're heading for the States in a few days? Cool! Which state you from?

Oh and I havent flown kites in ages! I used to when I was in saudi. Now kite flying is for the kids. In fact, I think I've forgotten how to. :D

Like the other posters on that site have noted, that's two of the camel spiders and a funny camera angle. They are also called wind scorpions and luckily they aren't poisonous. They are pretty darn freaky looking though. The biggest one I've seen was about 6mm or so.

6mm? as in millimeters? thats pretty small, we use to have huntsmen spiders in our backyard before, and they were always getting into the house cos of the summer heat, those ones get as big as your palm, and theyre dark and hairy but not deadly, just very ugly.

Whoops, metric system conversion problems, I meant to say 6cm- and that was including his legs.
