Dennis Miller quote

A quote from Dennis Miller. Before you condem the man, think about what he's trying to say.

"We need to hit these terrorists hard. Every place over there is a 'Holy Site'! Screw that! The most holy site in the world is an elementary school full of kids on the first day of class, and those animals desecrated one."

What he's saying is that the bad guys have no respect for anything- holy sites are just a place for them to hide. They killed innocent kids, took human lives- a building is just a building just as a book is just a book.

He said this after that school was blown up a few months ago killing all of those children.

I thought about this some more last night and here is what I came up with. You’ll probably find it offensive too, but it’s not intended to be I promise.

Most Americans, me included, along with most of the non-Muslim world apparently, wonder why the Muslim community gets more outraged at the perceived desecration of a building or a book than at the murder of innocent people. I’m not saying that we should wantonly destroy anything if at all possible, but if you’ll notice, the outcry is always loudest about this mosque or that site, or whatever rather than the fact that a bunch of kids or other innocent people got blown up.

The recent incident with the supposed desecration of the Koran is a fine example of this- it’s a book folks, a copy of an original text. Even if the incident in question had occurred- which the story has been retracted since it couldn’t be substantiated- why in the world would people riot and kill their own countrymen and people of the same religion? I can’t imagine the Koran says that if someone does something that you don’t like it’s OK to go out and wantonly kill someone. That’s one of the stupidest things I’ve heard of. It’s as brilliant as the folks in California rioting after the Rodney King verdict and burning down their own neighborhoods or the peasants in Africa burning the farms and then starving or any of a dozen other examples that you can probably think of.

I don’t want to see folks destroying Bibles or any other book, religious or not, but I realize that it’s what in the book that is important, not the book itself. The same goes for buildings- they are created by man and as such only have the value that we assign them. Only nature has intrinsic value since we didn’t create it. I may get mad and think it’s a terrible shame, but I’m not going to go destroy someone else’s property or kill someone over it.

I believe that is why the statement was made- we tend to watch in horror and disbelief as the killing goes on and yet a louder cry is raised about something inanimate.

Again, I’m not trying to offend, but I’d certainly love to have someone explain it to me as I can’t figure it out myself.

Alot of muslims are killed worldwide, whether kids, women families etc, and we do feel bad for them, its not like we take it lightly, we have trust in God that things will not stay this bad, and part of our religion is to have patience, we beleive justice will be served one day, but when something like this happens, about the Quran, its insulting the faith that we beleive in.

And sometimes ppl get frustrated, and its like the final thing that drives them to do something dramatic, ie suicide bombers or the self starvation tactic. ive written something about that on my old blog, about trying to understand the reason behind why he was driven to such an action.

and about ppl killing others from their own religion...well our religion does order that and the quran does not say that...what it does say is that you defend your religion and your property, if you are attacked you have to fight back and defend urself....you notice that all these world over wars todo with muslims are also on muslim land?

Also im sure youve heard that saying; dont judge a religion by its people, Judge it by its scriptures...

Worldwide i dont think you would find any religion, whether Islam or Christianity where ppl adhere to its completely, right?

I concur with you- I still think you believe me to be attacking your religion though which I swear I'm not trying to. I really would like a better understanding of the mindset of so many of these folks though.

I understand that many have grown up knowing nothing but war and violence which surely desensitizes you to additional killings. I also understand that the talking heads on the news will always strive to show the biggest idiots with the loudest mouths in an effort to bolster ratings. That still doesn't explain the violence between the factions nor does it show any real effort to come up with a solution to the (multitude of) problems facing this country.

It would be different I suppose if the forces that want to drive the Americans and the present Iraqi administration out had any sort of ideas for improving the country, but they haven’t set forth any that I’m aware of. It’s all screaming about how bad things are without bringing anything positive to the table.

I also don’t understand how anyone could believe that blowing up innocents could change someone’s mind- oddly it seems to in some case though. Personally, if someone killed one of my children I would make it my life’s goal to at least help make sure that they met their own demise. Luckily I have no kids.

As for the Koran, it’s still just a book. Even when I attended church faithfully I would never dream of killing someone for defiling the bible. People all over the world, including my own countrymen, burn my country’s flag, but I believe that they have a right to expression- you can destroy the fabric, but not what it stands for.

And yes, I believe that there are more hypocrites within all religions than true believers.

Just my personal opinion………..

Salam..

The problem here is that you do not get the full picture. You only see one side of it.

You see, in the case of Muslims, our religion 'Islam' is not JUST a religion. It is a way of life. It is what we are. It is what we are made of. It is everything for us.

An analogy would be to compare it to a field in a village, which is the source of food for an entire community.

Yes the villagers would be mad at you for killing someone amongst them. But more so, if u cut off their only supply of food (by which means you are a cause for death of many others).

Some of them would be willing to die to save the crops for the sake of their wife and kids. Some of them would be willing to kill you to save the crops for the sake of their family.

Being rich and having everything you need, might make it difficult for you to picture how much the little food they earn matters to them. But that is literally what they live on.

For us Muslims, without our religion we are nothing. Hence, we are willing to risk our lives to protect our religion. We are willing to kill to protect our religion. And our strength comes from our faith, which we derive from the Quran and the Hadith. We will not let anyone take it away from us. The mosques are our places of worship. they are not just 'buildings'.

Destroying 'one' mosque in any corner of the world, is like pinching a piece of flesh off of each one us muslims out there. Every Quran that you burn, is like an ounce of blood lost from each one of us.

Now as per the killings, we regard all Muslims around the world as one 'Ummah'. Something like one body. You hurt one muslim in one part of the world, you have hurt all of us. Because we feel the pain even if you hurt the tip of our fingers. We will object to your actions and try our best to protect them as well.

Both matters, animate or inanimate, are of equal standing.

And regarding suicide bombers, and the killing of innocent children. Islam clearly and completely forbids any such action. Such action has clearly defined punishment. However, it is very rare that you find any country following the true Islamic Shariah (laws). Hence, naturally people pick up that the Muslims dont care and actually promote such behaviour. Which is obviously not the case.

A day shall come when true and fair justice shall be served. No account will go un-rewarded or un-punished. All who deserve shall recieve their share. Both the evil and the pious. And noone will be able to change what they have done.
In fact, suicide is the worst death. Astagfirullah and May Allah Prevent Us All From Such Thoughts. Ameen.

Blue Rose- I must commend you on your writing prowess. That is basically what I thought , but I wanted someone to actually say it without me alluding to it- if that makes any sense. I wanted an answer in plain terms that anyone reading, including me, could follow.

Being agnostic, I don’t follow the religious fervor or define myself by religion; to each his own though.

'commend'? I dint get that..

And yea I've seen a couple of people like you who know what your talking about, yet pretend not to. Interesting characters you all are.. Lol..

Anyway its always a pleasure to come across someone weird once in a while..

Commend- To express approval of; praise.

I thought you stated your point very well! It was a well thought out and well stated argument (classic sense of the word argument, not in a negative way).

Like I said, I kind of figured that's what the answer was, but I wasn't sure and I didn't want to state something as fact when I figured I could get an actual answer from someone in the know.

And yeah, I'm kinda wierd....

First, thank you.. :D

Second, I'm pretty glad you used the term 'argument'. One of my favourite hobbies. Something I enjoy a lot (whether I'm winning or not..lol).

Third, its nice to know you did think along those lines as well. Not many do.

Fourth, weird is good.

By the way, are you american? (I cant recall if you did say so somewhere). And also, Jew or Christian?

I'm American. I was raised Christian, but if asked, I'd have to say that I'm agnostic and have been for some time.

Sooner or later you will come to believe in something. You will have to. At some point, after you have exhausted all of your humanly means to make sense of your life situation, you will turn to a power greater than yourself for answers. And when you are ready, they will be well received.

When you come home, set aside an evening to talk to me about my, for lake of better words, epiphany.

I'm not sure where this comment fits into this thread, but hey, nobody ever accused me of fitting in.
